For the business owners out there, what is it that you are chasing? Are you passionate about developing something to dramatically change how things are done? Are you trying to change the world? Are you chasing a magic number in the bank account?
This Daily writing prompt is a good reminder for me. In between all the daily struggles, the self-doubts, what is it truly that brings me joy? While adding a few more zeros to my bank account would undoubtedly bring me a lot of excitement and fulfilment, I do not think that will bring me everlasting joy.
Growing up I loved to collect Sanrio merchandise. My dad would bring me to the Sanrio store and I would go on a shopping spree to collect points in exchange for cute little gifts. When I got home, I would always be most happy about the tiniest thing, like that Hello Kitty sticker sheet or the ruler with all the characters on it, that brings me most joy. I don’t care about all the other shit because I got them to rank up points. This is how we often get distracted in life. We think we need more but we got our eyes are just on the wrong prize.
Looking back, I see now how those tiny joys taught me what really matters. What brings me most joy now is nothing material. It is that gut feeling of knowing that things will be okay. It is knowing that we will figure it out somehow, even when my inbox is a warzone and my kids’ schedules are a mess. Like that time a client bailed on a deal because someone did his ass, I wanted to scream, but I trusted the universe had a plan. Spoiler: it did. Two weeks later, back channel told us that he is not someone we can onboard in the first place. He would have brought us bad rep. That’s the thing – we’re so busy chasing the “big win” that we forget the real prize: peace.
Know that we will figure it out, somehow, someway.
